This WORKSHOP is a part of ONE HUNDRED YEARS & COUNTING: RE-SCRIPTING K G SUBRAMANYAN, presented by Emami Art in collaboration with Seagull, The Faculty of Fine Arts, MSU Baroda and KCC Conservation Lab at Kolkata Centre for Creativity.
The Sara (Earthen Platter) Painting workshop is an enriching and immersive experience for all Sara painting enthusiasts from diverse backgrounds. There is no age bar for those who can participate, and the most exciting part is that the cohort will have the opportunity to paint Saras alongside award-winning artists, theatre designers, calligraphers, and other esteemed figures in the Calcutta art world. This collaborative environment promises to be inspiring and educational, allowing for the exchange among artists, scholars and experts.
Including a conservation material expert from the KCC Conservation Lab underscores the importance of preserving and protecting artistic heritage, ensuring that the paintings created during the camp endure for future generations. Soumik Nandy Majumdar's overview of KG Subramanyan's concept of Sara painting adds depth to the experience, providing participants with a deeper understanding of the artistic tradition they are engaging with.
The opportunity to publicly display the painted Saras at the end of the session is a fantastic way to showcase the participants' talents and dedication in the quintessential K G Subramanyan medium. To make it wholesome, we recommend you attend Soumik Nandy Majumdar's illustrated lecture on the subject on the same evening (25 May)-"সুব্রম্মণ্যনের সরাচিত্রঃ পুরাকল্প থেকে কল্পনা - Subramanyan's paintings on the earthen platters: Playing with the tradition", to further enhance the academic and playful aspect of the camp, offering insights into the cultural and historical significance of Saras painting and Subramanyan's take on it.
This programme promises to be a transformative experience for all involved, providing a platform for creativity, learning, and community engagement. Undoubtedly, it will leave a lasting impression on the participants and enrich the artistic landscape. On the stalwart modernists' birth centenary, let's celebrate Subramanyan's legacy together!
