EMAMI ART EXPERIMENTAL FILM FESTIVAL 2023
EAEFF 2023, titled Boikolpik, aims to offer a novel and unique focal point dedicated to experimental and avant-garde film practices, gathering a worldwide community interested in alternative art film-based research processes. Our annual festival, which is currently in its second edition, will provide a platform for sharing and creating practice-based knowledge and nourishing critical thinking among the city's enthusiastic cinephiles and film scholars. The festival is conceived as an encounter for intersubjective exchanges, a moving image exhibit, and a training fete that combines the use of audio-visual archives, found footage and re-appropriated materials of any kind to produce a different cinema experience, merging multiple and diverse perspectives into an embodied adventure where the primal and the contemporary actively unfold with a joyful yet unorthodox interpretation.
The festival will host various curated sessions on expanded cinema by internationally renowned experimental filmmakers and scholars. To instigate a more democratic interaction between the maker and the viewer, there will be post-screening Q&A, panel discussions and masterclasses by eminent filmmakers and professionals from the field who will share their experience of experimental filmmaking. The curated sessions include Experimental Films from Canada by Solomon Nagler, Experimental Film from Southeast Asia, focussing on Indonesia by Riar Rizaldi, and Experimental Films from the East and Northeast India by Mehdi Jahan. The festival also includes Masterclasses by Wolfgang Lehmann on experimental filmmaking and Ashish Avikunthak onthe conceptual framework ‘Cinema of Prayoga’. Along with the masterclasses and curated sessions, there are Special programs - a session on Photo Films by Gusztáv Hámos and Katja Pratschke and ‘Hearing Cinema - an auditory experience’ by Budhaditya Chattopadhyay. The festival will also screen the films selected for the competition session through an open call. Among the selected films that will be screened, two films by two different filmmakers/collectives, one from the short and mid-length category and the other from the long category, will be selected by an eminent jury panel for the Emami Art Experimental Film Awards.
Raju Roychowdhury is the director of the festival and programs of the second edition of the Emami Art Experimental Film Festival.
