This TALK is a part of ONE HUNDRED YEARS & COUNTING: RE-SCRIPTING K G SUBRAMANYAN, presented by Emami Art in collaboration with Seagull, The Faculty of Fine Arts, MSU Baroda and KCC Conservation Lab at Kolkata Centre for Creativity.
K. G. Subramanyan’s paintings on the earthen platters, conventionally known as Sara, reveal yet another charming aspect of this versatile artist. His curiosity concerning any new/traditional mediums led to an almost instant fascination with Sara paintings, and he never ceased to explore this medium, especially during the Nandan Mela every year at Kala Bhavana. Playful and thought-out at once, Subramanyan’s Sara paintings are motivated by an irresistible urge to play with the traditional format head-on and explore their linguistic potential. Thus, the conventional ritualistic tone turns into witty images, and the gesture of worship turns into celebration and subversion.
